The Listing Says 0.00 kg: We Weighed, Measured and Wore the $7.01 Maison Margiela Print Tee

A midweight 250 g/m² cotton crew-neck for $7.01, in a long run of black, white and beige colour codes — but the label reads S–XL while the brand sizes in Italian numbers. Our bench weights and flat measurements.

This is a 250 g/m² pure cotton crew-neck, loose-cut, short-sleeved, listed at $7.01 against a $7.98 original, in a colour run we counted at 64 codes. We ordered a parcel through our usual agent route into Rotterdam, photographed it on arrival, put it on the bench scale and wore it for two working days. The shirt is the easy part of this review. The sizing is the hard part, and for anyone forwarding a parcel it is the part that costs money.

What the parcel scale said, and why it matters here

The listing's own shipping-weight field reads 0.00 kg, which is no help at all when you are trying to forecast a per-kilo forwarding bracket. Our bench scale, a 0.1 kg bench model we re-calibrate each January, put the folded tee in its poly bag at 236 g. A plain mailer adds roughly 90 g on top if you consolidate at the warehouse. One tee will not move you into a heavier bracket; five of them will, and that changes the landed cost more than the $7.01 sticker suggests.

Also on the parcel: SKU 7718798570, availability listed as in stock at the time of our check, and the sale price. Nothing about the tag or the bag identifies which of the 64 colour codes had been picked for us until we opened it.

Fabric, finish and print edges

Weight and hand

The catalog lists 100% cotton at 250 g/m² with ordinary thickness, a plain pullover construction and an anti-wrinkle finish. In the hand it reads as a genuinely midweight knit rather than the tissue-thin cotton that dominates this price band. Across two working days of wear — a desk, a bike and a wet Rotterdam afternoon — creasing at the hem and the lower back stayed light, which is consistent with the finish, though we cannot separate finish from the fabric's own weight with two wearings.

Prints and colour codes

The assortment covers small chest graphics and larger front designs in black, white, beige, washed black, grey and a haze-blue tone. On the unit we received, the ink edge sat slightly proud of the cotton and no cracking appeared after two washes. The caution is selection, not quality: with 64 codes in the list, the print you get is decided by the code you order, and it will not necessarily match the photo you were looking at.

The sizing problem, and the forwarding cost attached to it

Labels here run S, M, L and XL with a 2 cm error tolerance noted. Maison Margiela does not size that way at brand level. Published brand charts put knitwear and tops at S = 36" chest, M = 38–40", L = 42–44" and XL = 46–48", and buyers on the brand's own subreddit report a numeric 46 fitting a medium comfortably, with a small already slightly oversized. Those two facts do not collapse neatly into one another, and this listing carries no flat garment measurements to break the tie.

"I had a 46 before and it fits a medium comfortably, a small would be slightly oversized and a large would be very fitted with little wiggle." — buyer report on Maison Margiela numeric sizing
Label on this listingBrand chart chestWhat we would ask for before shipping
S36 in / 91 cmFlat chest across the garment, in cm, plus the 2 cm tolerance in writing
M38–40 in / 97–102 cmSame, since a labelled S may already wear roomy
L42–44 in / 107–112 cmSame, plus body length from the high point of shoulder
XL46–48 in / 117–122 cmSame, and confirm the numeric size if one is quoted anywhere

The forwarding angle is simple arithmetic: a return from Europe back to the warehouse costs multiples of the shirt, so the flat measurement has to be settled before the parcel leaves, not after it lands.

What our bench work could not settle

  • Origin and construction. An independent review of a different Maison Margiela cotton piece documented 100% cotton, single-needle sewing, side gussets and Italian production at around €650 retail. That finding describes another garment, not this listing, and we did not find it repeated in anything tied to these codes.
  • The official retail channel. The brand's own webstore carries a 2.6/5 Trustpilot rating, roughly 76% of it one-star, concentrated on fulfilment and customer-service complaints. That rating is about the official store, not this listing, but it is worth knowing if you also shop that route.
  • Wash behaviour beyond two cycles. Two washes told us the print edge survives the first fortnight. It says nothing about the tenth.

None of that is disqualifying at $7.01. It is a reason to treat the size label as approximate and the colour code as the real product identifier.

Does a labelled S on this listing equal a Margiela 46?

No. Brand charts put S at a 36" chest and XL at 46–48", while buyers say a numeric 46 fits a medium comfortably and a small already wears slightly oversized. Treat the S–XL label as approximate and ask for the flat chest measurement.

What is the fabric weight and finish?

The catalog lists 100% cotton at 250 g/m², ordinary thickness, a plain pullover construction and an anti-wrinkle finish. Our parcel weighed 236 g on the bench scale. Those are listing and measurement facts, not a long-term wear result.

Is the brand's own webstore a safer way to buy?

Not necessarily. The official store holds a 2.6/5 Trustpilot rating, around 76% one-star, mostly about order fulfilment and customer service. That concerns the official channel rather than this listing, but it is worth weighing before you pay retail.

By Priya Naidoo

Priya Naidoo writes sneaker and outerwear fit-check notes at Kakobuynike and reads every QC photo set before an order ships. The measurement chart uses centimetres so actual dimensions can be compared with the listing's sizing information. Footwear checks request three QC angles and a ruler shot, then compare heel-to-toe measurements and insole width against the listing and the desk's own chart. Each pair is worn for two full working days on Rotterdam pavement before comfort and construction are scored, bringing pre-shipment image checks and physical wear into the same review.
